Preparing Your Finances for Summer Travel

Summer is the perfect time to hit the road, take a family vacation, or finally book that weekend getaway you’ve been planning. While travel brings excitement and memories, it can also bring unexpected expenses and increased fraud risks if you’re not financially prepared.

Before packing your bags, take a few simple steps to help keep your finances secure and your trip stress-free.

Create a Travel Budget Before You Go

One of the easiest ways to avoid financial stress after vacation is to plan ahead. Consider creating a realistic travel budget that includes:

  • Transportation and fuel
  • Hotel or lodging costs
  • Food and dining
  • Entertainment and activities
  • Emergency expenses
  • Souvenirs and shopping

Having a clear spending plan can help you enjoy your trip without overspending.

Use Digital Banking to Stay Connected

Traveling doesn’t mean you have to lose track of your finances. Mobile and online banking tools allow you to:

  • Monitor account activity in real time
  • Transfer funds between accounts
  • Deposit checks remotely
  • Set up account alerts
  • Temporarily lock or unlock debit cards if needed

Checking your accounts regularly while traveling can help you quickly spot unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity.

Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, and coffee shops may be convenient, but it can also expose your personal information to scammers.

To help protect your financial information:

  • Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi
  • Use secure, password-protected networks when possible
  • Enable multi-factor authentication on important accounts
  • Keep your banking apps and devices updated

Notify Your Bank About Travel Plans

If you’re traveling out of state or internationally, letting your bank know ahead of time can help prevent your debit card transactions from being flagged as suspicious.

It’s also a good time to:

  • Verify your contact information is current
  • Confirm your card expiration dates
  • Review your daily spending limits
Travel notices can easily be set up through the CSB Mobile App. Simply open the app, access the sidebar menu, and tap your name at the bottom of the screen. From there, select Settings and then Travel Notices. You can enter your travel dates and destination(s), which will notify our eBanking team of your upcoming travel plans. You can also reach out to our eBanking team to let them know by giving us a call at 979-596-1421, or emailing ebanking@csbtx.bank.

Watch for Travel Scams

Unfortunately, scammers are especially active during busy travel seasons. Be cautious of:

  • Fake vacation rental listings
  • Phishing emails claiming to be airlines or hotels
  • Fraudulent booking websites
  • Text messages requesting payment or personal information

Always book through trusted sources and avoid clicking suspicious links.

Prepare for Emergencies

Unexpected situations can happen while traveling. Before you leave:

  • Carry more than one form of payment
  • Keep emergency contacts accessible
  • Set aside extra funds for unexpected expenses
  • Know how to quickly report a lost or stolen card

A little preparation can go a long way in protecting both your trip and your finances.
